Springing on a new wardrobe: what to wear this season

Although it’s hard to tell whether winter has ever truly ended in Plymouth, technically, as of March 21, spring has sprung. That means a whole new slew of trends that are soon to be appearing in any fashionista’s closet this season.

As usual, spring is all about breaking out of the monotony of dull winter colors like black and gray. This spring, there’s going to be a definite extra burst of Crayola in stores, as primary colors are supposed to be huge, and the brighter, the better. Yellow is going to be the main color of choice (Reese Witherspoon was the first to rock this trend earlier this year at the Golden Globes), but it’s important to “find the right tone for your skin and the right brightness for your comfort level,” says the People StyleWatch March 2007 issue. The safest route to take is an accessory, which will work best for any skin tone because most are worn away from the face.

Another trend popping up in fashion magazines everywhere is clear, literally. How can something that is invisible be one of the biggest pieces in fashion this season? Lucite accessories like shoes, bracelets and bags are making a huge splash despite being translucent. However, there are precautions one needs to take when “baring it all,” especially with a purse. Certain objects that a girl throws in her bag may not be suitable for all eyes, so make sure that everything in there that’s uber embarrassing. Be careful of plastic overload, which can look cheap (after all, the material is not exactly expensive.) Small elements, such as bangles or necklaces, are a good way get involved with this trend without shelling out the big bucks.

When Angela, a contestant on Bravo’s recent installment of “Project Runway,” insisted on gluing on little cloth flowers to all of her pieces, the judges thought she was crazy. But like other geniuses before her, she was apparently ahead of her time, as it appears that rosettes are making a big impact. When used appropriately, they add a light but feminine touch to an ensemble. Flowers are always in for spring and “They’re a great way to incorporate the look of flowers without wearing a pattern,” celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe said in the March 2007 issue of Cosmopolitan.

Oversized bags have been popular for some time now. While they’re super convenient for the girl that likes to have lots of stuff right at her fingertips, they’re not exactly classy looking. Let’s face it- there is a reason why they are referred to as “hobo bags.” However, for the-oh-so elegant lady, there is a very stylish new option, the day clutch. Traditionally, clutch purses have only been used with evening ensembles, but the new bags are bigger and more usable than ever. Slightly bigger than the average clutch, they are expansive enough to include all of the daily essentials.

All black nails have been hot since last fall. However, spring is all about lightening up! Stylists are predicting that white will be the new polish of choice. Make sure that the enamel is laid on thick and even, because streaks give off the look of White-out. Also, like clothes, brights are going to be popular for nails as well, especially red. Choose a bright (but not orange) shade that stands out. Deep red is better kept left with fall pieces.

Long beaded necklaces will be giving up their reign this season to large pendants. A round charm on a single chain makes a statement without being chunky. While modern styles are hitting stores (Cartier has one out that’s over $2,000!), the best bet for keeping up with this trend without breaking the bank is to search Grandma’s jewelry box for a vintage style pendant. Just polish it up and throw it on a fresh new chain.

While these are some trends that are easy enough to follow, there is no doubt that female students will still have to brave the cold in their thick winter jackets, Uggs and super-long scarves. Start with a few accessories while it’s still a bit chilly, and work up to full fledged spring styles when the time (and the weather) is right!
