Marketing the NCAA Championship

Plymouth State students were given a special treat on Monday night at Biederman’s Sandwich Shop on Main Street. Students who came in to catch the NCAA Basketball Championship game, which pitted the Florida Gators against the Ohio State Buckeyes, were given random prizes such as t-shirts, hats, and free sandwich cards, among other prizes.

The promotional event at Biederman’s has actually been in connection with a Plymouth State class. “We work with Eileen Bennett’s Principles of Marketing class,” explained Biederman’s employee Bob Crosby. “They organize and promote the event down here, and we decided to go with the basketball game.” Crosby went on to explain that this is the second year that they have used the NCAA Championship as the event, and have also used some football games to garner attention as well. The promotion for the event began at 6 P.M. with the give away and the basketball game starting at 8 P.M.

“We made a big investment in a high definition television which helps out with sports viewing,” said Scott Biederman. “From a business standpoint, poetry night ran itself out and people wanted a different atmosphere.”

Biederman’s has been an integral part of the Plymouth State community for a long time. Besides helping the marketing class, they have also been very generous to the sports teams, many times helping make sandwiches for their road trips to various games. In the past they have also given special sandwich cards to the Plymouth State teams that took half-off the price of sandwiches.

“The sports thing has been really our focus, especially with local teams involved,” said Biederman.

Judging by the attendance, the event was a huge success. In the end, the saying, “The way to a Plymouth State student’s heart is through their stomach” surely held true. If people want to hold a promotional event, Biederman’s is certainly a surefire way to gain the attention of PSU students.

“We have worked with Eileen Bennett to promote the NCAA Championship game and some of the local games and extracurricular activities,” said Biederman.
