Review: Plymouth State Guitar Ensemble

Plymouth State students were treated to the exceptional music of the PSU Guitar Ensemble Tuesday, April 10, in the Smith Recital Hall.

The ensemble consists of six performers, including Luke Morse, Mike Plourde, George Koenig, Nate Weaver, Dan Rutman and Phil Barber. Each member brought something special to the performance, making every song their own while keeping it together as a group. It was much like watching a classic jam fest among friends.

Songs played include “Blue Bossa,” “Autumn Leaves,” “Joy Spring,” “Blue Monk,” and “Wave.” The group also arranged a stirring number for their encore at the end of the show. The jazz background of many of the songs came through brilliantly, adding a whole new element to the evening.

The reaction by the audience was resounding applause; no one wanted the show to end when the hour was up. Many lingered after the concert to congratulate the performers on a job well done.

“I thought it was really cool. I’m really into jazz and ‘Autumn Leaves’ and ‘Wave’ are two jazz standards; to hear them played on guitar was very interesting,” said junior Becky Roudolf. Fellow junior Jaqueline Fifield agreed, “It was really good.”

The event was a great way for Plymouth State students to support the vast musical talent of their friends and fellow musicians. Many more campus events like this are planned throughout the remainder of the semester. Interested students should be on the look out and go show their support.
