Sports spotlight: Kent Cherrington

Whether young or old, a star or benchwarmer, everyone deserves recognition. Kent Cherrington, Sports Information Director of the Athletic Department, is one of those people. Although he remains behind the scenes, he does tremendous work for Plymouth State.

Cherrington, a resident of Campton, New Hampshire, has been serving in the Athletic Department of Plymouth State University for 13 years. Cherrington went to high school in Milford, MA and attended the University of New Hampshire to pursue a major in Sports Communication.

Throughout most of his high school and college career he participated on the swimming & diving, tennis, track, football and skiing teams.

While at UNH, Cherrington wanted to be a radio broadcaster, serving time at the university radio station and the student newspaper. Later in his college career, he gained an internship at the UNH Sports Information Office.

After graduating from UNH, Cherrington worked another internship at the University of Connecticut (UConn). After some time, he was offered a position as Assistant Sports Information Director at Miami University in Ohio. After serving at Miami U. for eight years, Cherrington wanted to get back to New England, where his family is originally from. Upon his return to New England, Plymouth State was offering the Sports Information Director position. With great expertise and experience under his belt, Cherrington was given the job, that he still holds today.

What many students, faculty and staff alike may not know is what exactly does the SID do? In fact, Cherrington’s job is rather complex and involved. Cherrington’s main mission is to promote and publicize the Plymouth State teams and student athletes. He makes contact with the media on a daily basis. He also writes several dozen publications, including programs for sports games and press releases covering game recaps. These publications, many of which are viewed by faculty, staff, students, athletes, parents and prospective students, help promote the athletics at Plymouth State for the NCAA and the Little East Conference. Among several other duties, he also handles photography, which includes headshots, action and team photos.

Cherrington, who resides in his tiny office on a daily basis, admits to enjoy working with students. Remember, next time you browse along the athletic website or read a press release, think of the man who makes it all possible.
