The sweetest thing: Common Man Apprentice

You scream, we scream, The Common Man screamed for ice cream and the student body delivered. Spring Fling’s tastiest treat was served up by 14 teams, each of whom competed for the honor of being the Common Man “Apprentice.”

Friday afternoon before and during the Battle of the Bands, ice cream peddlers from Professor Bonnie Bechard’s Organizational Behavior class set up on the HUB green. They brought never-before-seen confectionary creations – from fortune cookie ice cream that can predict the future to coconut ice cream served up, naturally, in a coconut bowl, to “Fireworks” featuring Pop Rocks which exploded onto the scene. Only one could claim the coveted title, though, and become the next Common Man’s Frosty Shoppe dessert specialty.

That was not the sole purpose of the event, though. Students were encouraged to come, try some ice cream and vote on their favorites. At around one to two dollars a pop, students felt that they were getting a good deal – and the proceeds were to be split between the Pemi-Baker Literacy Taskforce and the winning team’s charity of choice.

Judges from The Common Man and PSU showed up and wandered from table to table, looking for cost effectiveness and presentation, but their tongues did the real testing – for taste.

The winners were not announced immediately, though. Instead, judges held off until a reception held at The Common Man on Tuesday, May 8.

At the reception, judges announced the team Monkey Business had claimed victory with their unique flavor, Monkey in the Middle. Team members included Mary Fenton, Ashley Rochefort, Derek Dignan, Eric Knuuttunen and Steven Morneau.
