Local entrepreneur gets on board in Plymouth

When students came to Plymouth, they may have been disappointed to find out that the only place that carries any skateboard products was Rino bike shop, where the selection can be slim. Thanks to Matthew Eddy, a 32-year-old veteran skateboarder and snowboarder of 22 years, from Natick, Mass., that problem has been solved with a new skate shop, created by skaters for skaters.

Eddy lived in Summit Co., Colo. for about eight years after high school, but due to knee surgery found himself back on the East Coast. As he recovered he worked at Blades Board and Skate in Mass., and eventually moved to N.H.

Eddy has lived here for four years, and has taught snowboarding at Waterville. Now, with the help of his wonderful girlfriend Lee Cooper, he has opened White Mountain Snow and Skate right here in Plymouth.

The Clock: How long has White Mountain been here in Plymouth?

Matthew Eddy: White Mountain Snow and Skate opened October 13, 2007.

TC: Who is your favorite skateboarder or snowboarder?

ME: It’s hard to say. I’ve looked up to a lot of skateboarders and snowboarders during my 22 years of riding a board. Anyone who is having fun.

TC: Did you always know that you where going to start your own shop?

ME: No but about eight years ago I started looking into the idea and finally, with the help of my girlfriend Lee, we were able to make it happen.

TC: What is your main goal here at White Mountain Snow and Skate?

ME: Our main goal is to provide the snowboarders and skateboarders in Plymouth and the surrounding area with a shop specializing in what they do.

TC: Do you think you are achieving that goal?

ME: Certainly, so far so good. We have gotten a lot of very positive feedback since we opened the shop.

TC: How do you enjoy working and running your own skate shop?

ME: Yes. It is a lot of hard work but it’s worth it.

TC: What are the different products you have in the shop?

ME: We carry snowboards, skateboards, long boards, men’s and women’s clothing, shoes, accessories, videos, and pretty much anything that relates to snowboarding or skateboarding.

TC: What are the more popular items that you have sold in the store?

ME: Long boards and skateboards have done extremely well for us as well as snowboards, shoes, and clothing.

TC: How do you go about choosing the products you carry in the store?

ME: We work closely with our reps from the companies as well as customer feedback and staying in touch with the scene.

TC: Is there anything that you are looking to change in the store?

ME: We’re very happy with how the store is in its current state but it would be nice to have a bigger basement so we could have a skate park too.

TC: Which do you think is more popular around Plymouth: long boarding or just regular skateboarding?

ME: I would say there is a pretty equal following for both, although lately we’ve been selling a lot more long boards to people just getting into it.

TC: What are the different long boards do you carry?

ME: We carry Arbor, Sector 9, Gravity, Loaded, Neversummer, and we’ll soon have Landyachtz available.

TC: What style of long boarding would they be good for?

ME: We carry a wide selection of boards from cruisers, to pintails, to minis. We have something for everyone.

TC: What are your most popular snowboarding products you carry?

ME: We’ve done well with what we’ve been carrying all around.

TC: How do you think they will do in this coming season?

ME: Hoping for the best.

TC: What do you think is the hardest part about running your own shop?

ME: The hardest part is working everyday no matter how tired we are.

TC: Have you ever thought about maybe someday in the future making another shop in a different location?

ME: Right now, we’re taking things one-step at a time.

TC: Are there any new events that are going on this year?

ME: We plan on having some events coming up for fall and winter so stay tuned.

Plymouth Snow and Skate is located on Main Street.
