The Panther’s defense answered every call, and a 13-7 second quarter lead was all the team would need to hold off the Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy, and earn their first victory of the season. The win lifted Plymouth’s record to 1-2, and was a close contest the entire way.
Plymouth was led by the play of senior running back Andrew Foglia (Montauk, N.Y.) who recorded 98 yards rushing on the day and scored one touchdown, a 21-yard touchdown run in the second quarter that would prove too much for the Mariners, although not without a fight and a thrilling finish.
A 32-yard pass from Maine Maritimes, first year Michael Fahey to senior Spencer Bowring in the closing moments of the fourth quarter gave the mariners the ball at the Panther’s one yard line. Plymouth’s defense, as they did all day, responded when it mattered, stopping the Mariners on all four downs with only seconds remaining.
PSU football traveled to UMass Dartmouth next Saturday to begin their Boyd Divisional schedule, while Maine Maritime, who fell to 0-2, visited Fitchburg State to open Bogan Division play.
Riding the momentum of an impressive win the previous week against Maine Maritime, the PSU football team looked to continue their winning ways as they traveled on the road again to take on Conference rival UMass Dartmouth. Even though the Panthers were able to carry a lead up until the final minutes of the third quarter, a win was not to be. As the Panthers were in the middle of a late quarter drive, which saw them move 74 yards to the Corsairs’ 16 yard line, a PSU fumble was recovered by UMass and ran back 88 yards for a touchdown and the win.
PSU, 1-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play, pays again Sat., Sept. 29 as they host Nichols College in the Homecoming game.
