Safety of Two Accounted for after Pemi River Incident

PLYMOUTH– Tues., Oct. 30, around 10:30 pm, scores of fire fighters, ambulance, state and university police, and rescue crews from Plymouth and surrounding towns, including New Hampton, Ashland, Holderness, and Campton, searched through the Pemi’s ferocious waters for an alleged missing person.

Many students gathered, looking over the flooded Rotary amphitheater along the Pemigewasset River, as groups of officials awaited with boats and other rescue equipment. Students close to the scene were asked by rescue officials to leave the area.

11:00 — A firefighter on the scene said, “We are still awaiting word on the police to confirm if there is a second person. We were told there were two people in the water.”

That a second person made their way into the river was never confirmed by officials.

The water rushed with strength and speed, swelled from Hurricane Sandy’s rain.

11:04 – Crews began to take off rescue suits and leave the scene, with both people accounted for.

Later, a firefighter who wished to remain anonymous, says “we should have an e-mail sent out tonight, explaining what happened.” No such email was ever sent to the Plymouth State University community.

On Wed. morning, Plymouth Police Chief Stephen Lefebvre confirmed with The Clock that both individuals had been accounted for and confirmed their safety. Lefebvre said that the department did not plan to run a press release, but would rather take calls to the station and answer callers’ questions.

As of now, the incident is still under investigation and no names will be released.

The Clock will update the story as soon as more information becomes available.
