Plymouth State Dominant in Men’s Hockey Home Opener

Plymouth, N.H – The Plymouth State University men’s hockey team opened their 2012-2013-season home at Hanaway Rink in front of a loud and rowdy crowd. Hoping to repeat from their championship season, the Panthers host to the team from Stonewall College.

Plymouth State opened the scoring early at 09:20 when freshman Josh Moody (Sunderland, Md.) was able to shoot it past the goalie after getting a nice feed from fellow freshman Brantley Sherwood (San Anselmo, Calif.) to put PSU up 1-0. Plymouth also outshot Stonehill by a margin of 8-4 to conclude the first.

The Panthers got on the board early in the 2nd at 5:07 when Alexo Cottle (West Chester, Pa.) scored his first goal of the season off the feed from Phil Arnone (Litchfield, N.H) to put the score at 2-0.

Stonehill finally got on the board early in the 3rd period, after senior Dana Borges (Sunderland, Md.) was able to put one past the PSU goalie for the PP goal. Plymouth State answered right back after freshman Andrew Wigg (Lantz, Nova Scotia) scored a shorthanded goal. Junior Travis Stevens (Montclair, Claif.) scored an empty-net goal with less than a minute to play to put Plymouth 4-1, followed closely by sophomore Mike Freitag (Westmont, Ill.) scoring off a rebound for a final score 5-1.

The Panthers finished with a 27-16 advantage in shots on goal.

Plymouth State will next play this coming Tuesday, Nov. 13, when they visit Westfield State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASAC) showdown.
