PSU Baseball Edges Castleton

 

Plymouth, NH- The Plymouth State Baseball team defeated Castleton Wednesday 12-11, in a high scoring matchup for both teams. The win extends PSU to a 17-16 record, while Castleton drops to 23-8. Sophomore Josh Young pitched the ninth inning and delivered the win for PSU, making his record an even 2-2 on the year.

                  Castleton started the game off real strong after a two doubles and a single drove five runs to the plate. Early in the second inning, Castleton drove in another run after a right field single making the score 6-0 going into the bottom of the second.

                  Plymouth decided that they were not going to let Castleton run away with the game. Junior Brandon Cox (Nashua, NH) scored the first run for the Panthers, after Castleton’s started threw a wild pitch. With two runners in scoring position Sophomore Justin Walsh (Goffstown, NH) capitalized on a lazy pitch, smacking a double to left center and making the score 6-3 heading into the third.

                  During the bottom of the third PSU caught up to be down by one after a sacrifice fly RBI and also an RBI double by Senior Dave Tammaro (Cheshire, Conn.). After Castleton notched another run in the fourth, PSU tied it up at seven a piece with a two run inning of their own.

                  The Panthers took the lead for the first time in the game when Senior Ryan  McIntosh (Lincoln, NH) shredded the cover off the ball homering to center and making the score stand at 8-7. Castleton later took the lead scoring in the seventh, twice in the eighth and then once more in the ninth. They lead 11-8 going into the bottom of the final inning.

                  After Castleton retired the first two PSU batters, Junior Rob Madonna (Cranson, R.I.) came in clutch hitting his third ball of the day, and giving the Panthers a huge rally cry. Directly after, Senior Steve Beard (Middleton, Mass) shot an RBI double and brought the Panthers within two. Taking advantage of momentum PSU’s Dave Tammaro hit an RBI single and kept the comeback alive. After Drawing a walk and allowing two men to reach base, Sophomore Brian Thompson smacked a game winning single scoring both runners and allowing Plymouth to win the game 12-11 in a dazzling comeback.

                  PSU goes back to a conference matchup Saturday with a double-header against UMass Boston. Castleton plays in a non-conference game against Skidmore College (N.Y.).
