PSU Baseball Sweeps Double-Header Against Colby

Plymouth, NH- The Plymouth Baseball team had a solid day on Sunday taking both double-header games against Colby College. The Panthers won the first of two 6-2, and the second game 4-2. With the win, PSU improves their record to 19-18. Colby’s mark drops to 9-20.

Game one started strong for the Panthers after Senior Steve Beard (Middleton, Ma.) was hit by a pitch and later scored when Rob Madonna (Cranston, R.I.) had an RBI Single. Just a batter later, the game was opened up even more after Freshman Dave Hall (Groton, Conn.) smacked an RBI double, scoring Brandon Cox (Nashua, NH). Sophomore Brian Thompson (Southington, Conn.) also had an RBI single to score Madonna and make the score 3-0 after the first.

After scoring two unearned runs off a Colby error during the second inning, PSU’s Brian Thompson hit a one out triple in the third. He later scored when Brendan Cosgrove (Merrimack, NH) beat the pitcher with an RBI single, making the score stand at 6-0 going into the bottom of the third.  Colby would score its only two runs of game in the third, but was shut down for the rest of the game.

Starting pitcher Jeff Runnels (Wolfeboro, NH) pitched an absolute gem for the Panthers going the full seven innings, tallying four strikeouts and only giving up two earned runs. His record jumps to an astonishing 5-1.

The second game was another strong outing for the Panthers under starter Tucker Regan (Niantic, Conn.) who bumped his record to an even .500 at 3-3.  Junior Ryan Wakefield closed the game up strong in the seventh inning, and earned his second save ensuring a 4-2 win for the Panthers.

In the top of the first PSU opened up the game after the bases were quickly loaded, and Dave Hall hit a single to score Senior Ryan McIntosh (Lincoln, NH). Fortunately for Colby they were able to get out of the inning beaten but only down by one.

The game would remain scoreless until the third when Hall had another huge double and then scored on a Thompson single, making the score 2-0 after three.

Plymouth added to their score in the top of the fifth. PSU’s Rob Madonna scored after Thompson had a nice RBI double.  Going into the bottom of the fifth with no runs, Colby felt a little fire and made the score 3-2 off a two RBI single.

Colby’s fifth inning rally would not be enough, remaining scoreless for the last two innings. The Plymouth Panthers would score one more in the sixth finalizing the score at 4-2.

Plymouth looks to keep their hot streak alive when they travel to Middlebury College Wednesday for a 4:00 matchup.
