Are finals stressing you out? If they are then take a minute, catch your breath, and remember that you can do this. Yes finals are important but don’t let yourself get overwhelmed. There are people and places all around Plymouth that are here to help, including your trusty staff at The Clock. So sit back, and take a moment to realize that you’re not alone. We are here to help.
University resources are important to remember when you’re preparing for finals. Of course there’s the library. Roommates and neighbors can be a distraction and can make it hard to focus on your work in residence halls, apartments and houses. The library is a great alternative to your living space because it’s main purpose is to help you get your work done.
However, if you find that the Lamson Library is not your cup of tea because it gets too crowded during finals, you get distracted people watching, it’s too far away or whatever other excuse you can come up with to not go, there are other options. If you live on the north side of campus closer to Hyde Hall, try the Centre Lodge on Merrill Street. If you’ve never bothered to venture in there before; they have computers, tables, comfy chairs, plenty of outlets and even a couple vending machines.
Two great resources Plymouth State University has to offer its students that are located on the bottom floor of the library. First there’s the PASS office, which helps students with documented learning disabilities. The PASS office is most commonly known for providing students with opportunity to take their tests outside of the classroom with extended time, however, they offer much more than that. As for finals week, try asking them to help you put together a study strategy.
A second great resource is the writing center. Many teachers advise their students to use the writing center, and for a good reason. The staff there knows their stuff and working with them could make all the difference on your final papers.
Then there’s your teachers. Never forget that they are always there to help you, that’s why their office hours are on their syllabi. But even if your free hours don’t match up with their office hours, most teachers are willing to schedule a time to meet with you. Remember, they are there because they want you to learn so don’t be afraid to let them know when you need help.
One of the easiest resources you can reach out to are your classmates. Because of technology it’s easy to get in touch with them, and they are in the exact same boat as you. Try asking classmates if they want to meet up and study together, it helps to compare notes in case you missed anything.
The most important thing is to stay calm. Yes, finals can be stressful and sometimes scary, especially if it’s your first year in college but you can get through them! Just make sure you have all the correct notes and information you need for your tests, work with your teachers and the writing center on your projects and papers. Most importantly make sure you eat regularly and get some sleep!
