Jam Night at Lucky Dog

When people think about “open mic”, they associate it with beginning guitarists grasping at the dream of fame and success.  When asked if they have heard of the band “Wet”, many would shrug their shoulders and have confused looks in their eyes.  The Lucky Dog Tavern was fortunate enough to have some great acts playing Wednesday night and the crowd progressively roared as the night went on.  Bill J., the live music coordinator at the tavern began his live music career five years ago.  Previously performing at Hong Kong Garden down the road, he says it’s a great time with friends and a good music environment.  “We are a jam band with structure” Bill stated.

I have been to many local live performances and this one tops the list.  The staff was very cool and welcoming and it didn’t feel like a dive at all, just a good place.  Steve, one of the resident bartenders, claimed the live music adds flavor to the week and opens the tavern up to different audience.  “Our clientele has been consistent since Bill began doing live music.  It’s a good midweek day in general” he said.

As people began showering in, “Wet” began their pre-set warm-ups.  Bill could be heard playing a slow, funky bass riff while Matt played a few sax licks reminiscent of Pink Floyd.  The atmosphere changed once the music began to play.  The drums got louder and rose to a cacophony as the tension built.  “It’s a taste of real music.  Doesn’t matter if you’ve been to thousands of open mics, the energy of every night is always fresh” said Sean, a local student.

As Wet finished their first song the entire room was filled with friends raising glasses and even a small group of people boogying by the stage emerged.  The sound or reverb guitar with a hint of “wah” was calming.  The drums were constant and had segments of loud and soft beats, which added variety to the percussion.

“Wet”, best described as a band with hints of blues and jazz with a swanky rhythm, represents a “‘Plug and Play’ atmosphere.  Its unrestricted music” according to Bill. It’s clear that the Lucky Dog Tavern is the place to be on a Wednesday night, especially if one wishes to indulge in blues, jazz, reggae, and rock.  The atmosphere is calm and excited at the same time.
