Volleyball drops a tough game to Middlebury College

The Plymouth Panthers couldn’t compete with the Panthers of Middlebury College Wednesday night. Middlebury defeated Plymouth, 3-0, in a non-conference match at Foley Gym.

Plymouth State University came out strong in the first set, but Middlebury College pulled away with a 25-17 victory and a 1-0 lead. PSU remained competitive in the second set when they came from behind to tie the score at 19-19. The score went back and forth briefly until Middlebury pulled ahead to win 25-22 and now a 2-0 lead. Plymouth played their strongest in the beginning of the third set when they were ahead 9-8. Middlebury took the game away after scoring seven straight points. Plymouth couldn’t respond and Middlebury College won 25-11, sweeping Plymouth State.

Plymouth State could not keep up with Middlebury College. Freshman reserve hitter Brianna Wojtas led the team with five kills, meanwhile Middlebury had two players recording 11 apiece. Kaitlyn Tedeschi and Jana Nieman, both top hitters on the season, were limited to only four kills against the Middlebury Panthers. Senior libero Cassie Pelton contributed with a team high, six digs.

The Plymouth State volleyball team will play again on Saturday when they host Western Connecticut State University and UMainePresque Isle for the team’s senior day at Foley Gym.
