Women’s Basketball Season Comes to an End

The eighth-seeded Plymouth State Women’s basketball team was defeated by the top-seeded Rhode Island College in the first round of the Little East Conference Tournament, 56-45, last Tuesday (2/25) night. The Lady Panthers had just played the Anchorwomen in the last game of the regular season, in which they were defeated 70-33.

Plymouth began the scoring with a layup from freshman DeAsia Lawrence (Middletown, CT). Rhode Island quickly answered going up on the Panthers, 10-4. A three-point shot from sophomore Taylor Perry (Simsbury, CT) brought it back within three but following the shot, the Anchorwomen rattled off a 15-3 scoring run. With eight minutes remaining in the half, Bry Bennett (Lancaster, N.H.) brought the Panthers within ten points after making a three-point play. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough as the Anchorwomen went into the locker room with the lead, up 38-25.

In the second half of the game both teams combined for twenty-two turnovers and only thirty-eight points. With 14:05 on the clock, Plymouth brought the game within ten points again following a jump shot from Perry. Rhode Island was able to rattle off another run, giving them a 20-point advantage. The Panthers responded with nine unanswered points cutting the lead to only 11 with five minutes remaining, but it wasn’t enough.

Senior guard Krystin Corliss (Loudon, N.H.) led Plymouth with thirteen points, while DeAsia Lawrence added twelve of her own. Bry Bennett contributed seven points, seven rebounds, and three blocks. Senior Kait Deering (Sidney, MA) finished with four points of her own and six rebounds in the effort.

The Lady Panthers season has come to an end, with an overall record of 2-22.
