Plymouth State Trumps Mass. Maritime

The Plymouth State Panthers came out firing and were able to hold off Mass. Maritime 12-5 in an away game last Tuesday. The win marked Plymouth’s second straight and put their record over .500 at 2-1. The loss snapped a three game winning streak that started the season for the Buccaneers, whose record now sits at 3-1.

The Panthers took little time to score when senior attack Chris Annunciata (Waltham, MA) sniped an unassisted goal only eight minutes into play. Plymouth went on to score three more goals in a row in the first quarter, including another goal from Annunciata who was assisted by sophomore Phil Pichel (Hopkington, MA). The Bucs scored only one goal in the first, which allowed Plymouth to gain momentum going into the second quarter.

Mass. Maritime was first to score in the second, but was shortly followed by another Panthers’ goal courtesy of Brett Miller (Windham, NH). Pichel followed his teammate’s footsteps and less than two minutes later scored a goal of his own. At halftime, Plymouth led the game 6-2 thanks to the offense’s fast start.

The second half proved just as good for the Panthers, who made it clear they were the more dominant team. Miller and Pichel were once again the lone Panthers to score in the following quarter, each notching their second goals of the game. The Buccaneers could make little gain on Plymouth in the third despite some opportunities, only scoring one goal to make the game 8-3.

Plymouth wrapped up the match the same way they started it, with just as big of a quarter as their first. The Panthers executed four goals in a row from the get go, one of those coming from Miller who achieved a hat trick. Although Mass. Maritime was able to score two goals late in the game, it wouldn’t be enough to catch Plymouth. When the final horn sounded the score remained 12-5 in favor of the Panthers.

The Plymouth State Men’s Lacrosse team looks to make it three straight victories when they travel to Saint Joseph’s in Portland, Maine.
