The Lady Panthers softball was eliminated from the Little East Conference Tournament, on day two, which took place on Saturday, May 3. Third-seeded Western Connecticut State University upset second-seeded Plymouth State, just as they had twice before in the regular season.
The game began slowly with no score at the bottom of the first inning. Western turned on the bats in the second inning, scoring five runs. The fifth run came from a PSU error. The Panthers answered with three runs of their own, in the top of the third. Freshman Emma Rhodes (Rochester, NH) reached first on a walk and freshman Masha Lange (Danville, NH) advanced the runner and reached base on a double. Junior Whitney Roberts (Chocorua, NH) and senior Bekah Jackson (Nashua, NH) recorded RBIs with an infield grounder and a single. Jackson stole second and scored on a Western error.
The Panthers only other run came in the top of the fourth-Freshman Nadia Wasuta (Jefferson, NH) got home off an infield grounder by Rhodes. The Colonials went on to defeat the Panthers, 8-4.
Roberts recorded the loss on the mound, her record falling to 13-6 on the season. Senior Nora Galvin (Windham, N.H.) relieved Roberts in the second frame, allowing three runs on seven hits, walking three, and striking out one.
The Colonials, voted the preseason favorites to win the LEC title, will continue tournament play. The Lady Panthers, co-champions of the regular season, finish the season, 22-13 overall.
