Softball Falls to Middlebury

The PSU Softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games at Middlebury College on Thursday evening. The first game was quiet at home plate, with a final score of 1-0. The nightcap was finished early at six innings, the score 9-1.

The first game was mostly a pitchers’ duel between Plymouth senior Whitney Roberts (Chocorua, N.H.) and Middlebury junior Neve Stearns. Roberts gave up the only run of the game on seven hits while striking out two, taking the loss. Stearns allowed five hits and struck out four.

Middlebury chalked up the only run in the bottom of the third on a RBI single from sophomore Erin Giles. Junior Kat Maehr was the runner that crossed home. She had connected with a single earlier in the inning and had advanced to third on a couple of wild pitches when Giles singled through the left side. PSU was unable to answer in the remaining four innings and took the loss, the final score 1-0.

Middlebury struck early in the second game, pounding out three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The action at home plate slowed down until the bottom of the fourth, when Middlebury connected for two more runs, and scored another two during the following inning. Plymouth junior Nicole Abreu (Hudson, N.H.) drove in PSU’s lone run in the top of the sixth with a RBI single to left field. The run would not be enough, as Middlebury drove in two additional runs in the bottom of the inning and ended the game after six, the final score 9-1.

With the loss, Plymouth drops to 12-16 (7-3 LEC). PSU returns home this Saturday for Senior Day with a LEC doubleheader against Eastern Connecticut beginning at 1 p.m. They will close their regular season on Sunday with another LEC doubleheader at Keene State.
