PSU Women’s Tennis Falls to Bridgewater

Thursday, October 22nd, the Lady Panthers fell 5-3 to Bridgewater State University in the semi-final round of the Little East Conference Championship tournament. The Bears of Bridgewater State (10-5) advanced to the championship match for the seventh time in the last eight years and will host #4 UMass Dartmouth on Saturday with an NCAA Tournament bid on the line.

The defending LEC champions, Plymouth State University, ended their season with a 9-6 record on the year. After doubles, the Bears led 2-1 and then won straight set singles to push to 3-1 on the day. The Panthers rallied back as they won the next two matches to even the score at 3-3 as senior Zara Jakubas (Califon, N.J.) posted a 6-1, 6-1 straight set victory at No. 1 singles and sophomore Sunny Jakubas (Califon, N.J.) also won in straight sets at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Zara and Sunny completed the season each with 11-1 records in singles. Zara finished up her career with a record of 25-1 in singles, all at No. 1 singles, while her sister, Sunny is 24-2 in her career, all at No. 2 singles. Zara also worked with freshman Irene Ireme (Concord, N.H.) who earned an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles against Bridgewater State.

PSU senior Zara Jakubas repeated as the LEC Player of the Year while she and her sister, Sunny, were named All-LEC First Team as singles players. Zara and her doubles partner, Irene Ireme were voted All-LEC First Team as a doubles duo.
