Panthers Men’s Ice Hockey continued their winnings this past week against the Connecticut College Camels, increasing their regular season record to 6-1. Standout freshman performances from forward Colby Lanceleve (Stewiacke, N.S.) and freshman goaltender Evan Morelli (Reading, Mass) certainly helped the Panthers triumph.

Both teams came out the gates ready, and hungry for a victory. The Camels struck first with 12:53 remaining in the first period. Senior forwards Tim DiPretoro and Joe Birmingham connected as DiPretoro fired a shot that was initially saved, but Birmingham was there to clean out the garbage. Controlling most of the action, and play in the opening period the Camels forced Plymouth State to work. As time wound down in the first the Panthers searched for the tying goal going into the intermission and they got it. Coming with just 14 seconds remaining, Chris Zucarro (Hudson, NH) evened things up with a shorthanded goal on a beautiful centering pass by Michael Economos (Crystal Lake, Ill.).

Entering the second period the Camels showed no sign of slowing up, giving the Panthers a real hard fought battle. Midway through the period Camels top line duo DiPretoro and Birmingham were able to tally another and regain the lead. The Panthers stayed calm, as Chris Zucarro netted his second of the night just 56 seconds later to tie everything up. Feeding off all the momentum both teams battled into the third.

At 11:11 remaining in regulation the Camels tallied to regain the lead. Even then, it still wasn’t enough for the Panthers as they were able to even the score at three and force overtime. This time Senior Andrew Wigg (Lantz, Nova Scotia) found freshman Colby Lanceleve, who connected on a one timer from the left circle. The Panthers put together an odd man rush in the first 26 seconds of overtime, allowing Lanceleve to score his second of the night and his sixth of the season to close out another Panther victory. Morelli Earned his first win of the season, turning away 39 of 42 shots faced.

Plymouth State returns to MASCAC action on Thursday, Dec. 3, with a visit to Worcester State University. Score was unavailable for press time.
