Plymouth State was able to get back into the victory column Tuesday night, after the team visited Norwich University. The Panthers entered Tuesday having lost three straight; the most recent coming in double OT against Eastern Connecticut State University. But this time it was the Panthers who came away with an exciting OT win of their own as they beat the Cadets of Norwich, 3-2.
Just like the game against ECSU, there was no scoring in the first half as both teams were locked in on defense. Norwich was able to get on the board first with a goal in the 65th minute and then found the back of the net again in the 70th minute give the Cadets a late 2-0 lead. But Plymouth would come roaring back. In the 86th minute, sophomore midfielder Marc Herrington (London, England), scored off an assist from junior forward Nick Rutherford (Sydney, Australia), pulling the Panthers within one. This proved to be the spark Plymouth needed as sophomore defensive midfielder Dan Shaw (Winchester, England), scored off of another Rutherford assist with five seconds left in regulation to tie the game and force overtime play.
As it seemed that a second overtime would be needed, senior Jesper Fredholm (Stockholm, Sweden), scored in the final seconds of the first OT giving the Panthers the overtime win. Senior goalkeeper Felix Lindberg (Stockholm, Sweden), was solid in goal recording seven saves on nine shots against.
Plymouth improves their record to 3-4-1 as Norwich gains their fourth loss of the season moving to 4-4-2. The Panthers are back in action this Saturday, October 1st , as rival Keene State (5-3) comes to town. The match is set for 3:30 pm.
