A few years ago, Plymouth State University changed “Columbus Day” to “Fall Holiday”. A member on Student Senate, Daniel Spearman, advocated to change the name to “Indigenous People’s Day”, in an effort to recognize and remember the injustices done to the native people of North America during the colonization of the continent. Coming from an area where there were multiple Indigenous tribes, including the Pemigewasset tribe, The Plymouth State Student Senate passed legislation last year to change the name of the holiday to “Indigenous People’s Day” to honor the natives from the area. Following the likeness of cities like Seattle, Washington and Rochester, New York, we want to honor the native people of North America. This follows our mission in being an open minded, accepting campus and community. We are proud to announce this change to “Indigenous People’s Day” and hope that our community embraces the change of the holiday.
