The women's field hockey team went up against Framingham State this past Saturday in a Little East Conference game. Haley Wakefield (South Paris ME) had a great performance with two goals under her belt, making it her season total three. PSU’s record goes to 2-2, 2-0 in the LEC.
The first half went scoreless even though Plymouth contained most of the control. But less than six minutes into the half, Wakefield scored her first goal. Keeley Bartolini (Topsham ME) brought the ball up the field and after passing it off to a teammate, Framingham’s goalie blocked the ball but that’s when Wakefield came in to score. Exactly 72 seconds later, Wakefield charged down mid eld and through defenders to find a shot on goal, making it 2-0 for the Panthers. FSU did find a hole and grab their single goal of the game around 60 minutes. But it was Shannon Ford (Bow NH) that had the last say when she scored her goal about ten minutes later. Wakefield usually plays center forward but was switched to right wing, and that when she had the scoring opportunities. “The switch gave me the opportunity to take the ball out wide and plow into the circle. I think I perform best when I have momentum and I can book it to the goal. That decision to change my position by coach was a good one based on the two-score outcome,” Wakefield said. They have a long way until playoffs and are critiquing small things while they can. “…we have a lot of strengths like our stamina, stick skills, and persistence but the one thing we struggle with the most is communication. That one aspect of the game is the most important because it helps us connect and be able to make quick sharp decisions.”They also had a game this past Wednesday against Fitchburg State. The final score was 1-0.
Field Hockey is back this Saturday against Western Connecticut. The home game at Holderness School is set for 11 a.m.
