The Plymouth State Women’s Soccer team walked away with a conference victory during their Homecoming match last Wednesday over Rhode Island College. It was the team’s fifth win of the season and their first in-conference win of the season.
The game started of in a heated defensive battle that resulted in a first half that saw no goals scored. But the Anchorwomen struck first with an unassisted goal that made its way past Freshman goalkeeper Cat Robbins (Franklin, Mass.).
The Panthers were able to answer 3 minutes later when Freshman Sarah Hicks (Sutton, Mass.) scored her 4th goal of the year. That goal by Hicks set the momentum in Plymouth’s favor as they went on to score two more goals to push their lead up to 3-1. Hicks scored the final goal, adding a second to her total, and senior Tabitha Josefik (Manchester, N.H.) tallied her first goal of the season and her career in the 83rd minute. Robbins had 8 saves on the day.
The Panthers then traveled to Eastern Connecticut on Saturday the 29th. The Panthers were shut out on the day and were downed, 1-0. Robbins tallied another 3 saves on the day.
On October 3rd, the Panthers hosted New England College at Arold Field. The Pilgrims jumped out to a fast 2 goal lead within the first 15 minutes of play. In the 24th minute, Hicks scored her 6th goal of the season to bring the Panthers within 1 heading into halftime.
Coming out of the half, it did not take long for the Panthers to tie up the match. Senior Sabrina Sweeney (Raymond, N.H.) was able to aim a header past the Pilgrim goalkeeper to even up the score.
That would be the final goal of the game, as the teams ended the match in a 2-2 draw.
Plymouth’s record heading into Saturday’s match is 5-3-2 (1-3). On Saturday, The Panthers will play host to in state rival, Keene State. The match is at 1pm.
