1. Men’s Hockey (last issue: 1) Sophomore Evan Morelli (Reading, MA.) made 34 saves Tuesday evening as Plymouth State University defeated Westfield State University, 3-1, in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's ice hockey regular season finale at Amelia Park Arena. PSU, 18-5-2 overall, 16-1-1 in the MASCAC and on a 10-game winning streak, will be the top seed in the tournament and will face the winner of Saturday's quarterfinal between #4 Fitchburg State and #5 Worcester State next Tuesday night at Hanaway rink.
2. Men’s Basketball (Last Issue: 2) the Men’s Basketball season ended Tuesday night, as they lost to Umass Boston 61-57. During the second half, Plymouth would cut the margin to one on multiple occasions, but could never regain the lead.
3. Women’s Basketball (Last Issue: UR) the Women’s Basketball team’s season also is officially over after a 59-42 loss to Western Connecticut in the LEC Quarterfinal on Tuesday Night Feldman Arena. Despite the loss, it was one of the most successful seasons in recent history. PSU's eight wins and five conference victories were the most since the 2009-10 season ,and the five league wins were more than the previous six years combined.
4. Women’s Indoor Track and Field (Last Issue: 3) Sophomores Selena Baillargeon (Saranac Lake, N.Y.) and Diana Perez (Cranston, R.I.) posted the top finishes for Plymouth State University last Saturday at the New England Division III Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by MIT at the Shobrys and Aronson Indoor Track.
Individual Athletes
1. Sophomore Ryan Stevens (Colleyville, Texas.) Men’s Ice Hockey: Stevens picked up an assist on the eventual game-winning goal during Tuesday night’s regular season finale against Westfield state. With the assist, Stevens finishes the regular season third overall in scoring with 35 points (18-17-35).
2. Senior Ernie Johnson (Springfield, Mass.) Men’s Basketball: Johnson scored a game high 15 points and three steals during the loss to Umass Boston on Tuesday. Johnson finished the season with 161 points and averaged 6.4 points per game.
3. Senior Kayla Wyland (Melrose, Mass) Women’s Basketball: Despite coming up short in Tuesdays quarterfinal, Wyland led the team with nine points and nine rebounds, ending her season with 297 points.
4. Sophomore Selina Baillageon (Saranac lake, NY) women’s Track and field: Baillargeon finished in 10th place in her specialty, the shot put, with a mark of 11.56 meters. It was nearly two feet shy of her career-best and the indoor school record of 12.12 meters that she set last week, when she captured the Little East Conference championship.
