Pull into The Garage with DJ Hobbit to be immersed in some grunge, alternative, and rock music.

The Garage is Sam Little’s radio show with the WPCR student radio. His show airs Fridays 9-11 p.m.

Sam Little is a first-year media communications major from Dunbarton, NH, who goes by DJ Hobbit on the air. He joined the radio his first month at PSU.

“I’ve always wanted to do something with radio,” said Little. “My eighth grade class did a ‘what do you want to be when you’re older’ project, and I actually did radio personality. I thought nothing of it, and then I came here and saw the guys at the WPCR table.”

The name DJ Hobbit came from an old nickname. “It’s awkward, because I’ve actually never seen a Lord of the Rings movie, but throughout high school I was called Samwise,” said Little. “I was struggling to find a name for a while. I got on the air and just said the first thing that came to mind.”

Little said that he didn’t have any technical knowledge of radio at first, but “it’s a lot easier then I thought it was going to be. I thought you would have to push a bunch of buttons and then pray to God, but it’s just like, button, button, you’re good.”

His show was originally called The Grunge Garage. “Then I realized, man, you can’t really make a playlist with just grunge, because while it was big back in the 90s, not a lot of bands nowadays play it,” said Little. He still plays grunge on his show. He describes the genera as “moody rock”.

Listeners can expect to hear some Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Muse, The Killers, White Stripes and his current favorite, Queens of the Stone Age.

Little used to be a music education major. “After a month of doing the show, I’m like, you know what, I want to make this my career,” he said. “I thought to myself, well, media and communications seems more awesome, because I can do radio stuff.”

Outside of the radio, Little can be found singing in the all-male a cappella group Vocal Order, and in University Choral.

“I play a lot of video games. I eat a lot of food,” said Little. “I really like pit barbecue food, like pulled pork. Anything that you can grill. I’m a vegetarian's worst nightmare.”

Little said his show is unique because “you don’t hear many of these songs on mainstream radio these days.”

Sam Little’s show The Garage airs on WPCR every Friday from 9-11 p.m. at 91.7 FM.
