The Fall semester of 2011, after a rocky start thanks to Hurricane Irene, is officially underway! Logan Sullivan, a first year student said, “Moving in was pretty hectic. Thank God they moved classes back; it was good to have time to settle in.” Now that the storm has petered out and classes are finally underway, students are beginning to explore and find out what Plymouth State University is all about.
Cody Carlson, a first year student, said “So far, it can get a little boring sometimes. I mean, it’s fun so far, I guess. I just got to get out more.” Cody is not alone; many first year students find themselves lost in a strange, new place and are eager to get out of their dorms and see what’s available around them. This is easier said than done. However, nothing comes to you. It’s up to the student to utilize the opportunities around them.
PSU offers a wide variety of clubs. Enjoy gaming? The Japanese Culture and Gaming Club might be for you. Perhaps you care to do something more with your time and make a lasting impact on the world. Ending Genocide Around the World (EGAW) Club is always looking for new and helpful members. The list of clubs is endless, and they are always looking for new people to join. PSU has one of the most competitive intramural sports leagues in New England ranging from soccer to softball and are carried throughout spring, fall, and winter. (And if you missed the Activities Fair, don’t worry, it’s not too late.)
Even if you don’t have time for these activities and want to concentrate on your studies, there are plenty of places to do so. The classic library setting offers many private rooms and booths for you, or you can switch it up and head downtown to Mark’s Speakeasy or Café Monte Alto and relax and read over a coffee. The downtown strip offers many relaxing restaurants, shops, and The Flying Monkey Theater which brings great live acts to Plymouth weekly.
If you find yourself counting the tiles in your dorm, take the time to explore the campus and Plymouth’s beautiful natural setting. The river can be an opportune place to kick back, and of course the mountains are some of the prettiest in the world. Rattlesnake Mountain is about a 20 minute drive from campus with a two mile hike to the top which offers a beautiful overview of the lakes region. These hills that inspired Robert Frost and Henry David Thoreau are sure to captivate you as well.
College is all about new explorations and breaking out of your shell. Don’t let the first year jitters hold you back. So if you find yourself in your cramped dorm listening to the same Lil Wayne song while creeping on Facebook, it’s probably time you joined a club and enjoyed the fresh New England air. Don’t let these opportunities pass you by. Now that we’re all settled, it’s time to get out there and enjoy what Plymouth has to offer. Best of luck this semester!
