I Hate Film Because I Love Film

A lot of people who read my reviews seem to think I’m a very unhappy person who hates film. All except two of my reviews for this year have been on the negative side. When I talk about upcoming releases, I don’t really get as excited as other people. The most fun I’ve had in the theater this year was watching “Jurassic Park” in 3D, for God’s sake. Why does it appear that I’m a downer about films when I’m actually in love with them?

Film reviews are always going to be objective, which means that my standard of a good film isn’t always going to match up with everyone’s definition. While I definitely have my own preferences, I like to think that I can enjoy most films and give a just review. I will never go with the flow of people’s opinion for the sake of it, an example of that being common reviews for the film “Beautiful Creatures” which most people didn’t like for being a “Twilight” ripoff.

While the film definitely had problems, I generally liked the movie. I feel that the movie did a little bit more to give itself personality. However, if I went along with other reviewers then I wouldn’t be doing anyone any good. The points of the reviews are to give people an opinion of a movie before they see it.

Now, despite what some people say, I actually do enjoy film more than some people should. I’m also not the person who will say “Everything was better when I was a kid” since I don’t really believe that. I like to watch older films and even read reviews of them for studying or for kicks. One of my favorite directors is a man said to be the worst director that has ever lived, Ed Wood.

He directed the infamous “Plan  9 from Outer Space” which is notorious for a ridiculous story, the shoe horning of a dead Bela Legosi into the plot, and much more.  I had found a box set of his movies and I watched them all. After watching them a couple more times, I didn’t see the “worst director of all time,” I saw a man who was fiercely passionate about what he loved. That’s what I most adore from a film, if it has love and passion behind it.

I actually like the first two “Scary Movies” mainly out of guilty pleasure, but some of the jokes are actually funny. However, the series has been milked to death, and I hate Scary Movie 3 & 4 (even though I have two copies of Scary Movie 4 for some reason). I have yet to see Scary Movie 5 but I don’t even need to see it at this point. There’s no love put into these movies, it’s only quick cash from just name recognition of the movies involved. They’re spoofing “Black Swan” and “Inception” for god’s sake, those aren’t even horror movies.

I hope this has cleared up my opinions on my critiques. I may seem harsh, but it’s because I want better movies. I doubt that anyone in the business is reading my reviews, but I don’t need them to read my reviews. I hope that people like you read my reviews and consider them before spending money on something. You don’t need to read every single review but consider them like buyers reviews. Wouldn’t you like to know that the product you’re going to buy is worth it?
