The Plymouth State Men’s Lacrosse team ended its season against UMass Boston on April 30, 2002. The Panthers ended the season 4-10 overall with a lot of ups and downs throughout the year.
Senior Andrew Quesnel was named All-LEC First Team as a midfielder and junior Jason Biedrzycki was also named All-LEC midfielder, but to the Second Team. Quesnel and Biedrzycki led the Panther offense this season. Quesnel sniped 28 times this season and added 15 assists, compiling 43 points. Biedrzycki collected 16 goals and 22 assists amounting to 38 points for the season. Close behind, junior Ken McGuire with 34 points, freshman Pat O’Malley with 24, senior Eric Gilbert with 23, and junior Kevin Finnerty with 21 points.
The Panther defense had a very strong season, especially after losing all of their starting defenseman from last season. Matt McCormick, Bill Cosentino, Ryan Cook, Bryan Greene, Geoff Arris, and Mike Ferelli all stepped up into a difficult role, playing extremely well throughout the entire season.
Goaltending was also an issue for Plymouth after losing their started from last year. Junior Dan Egan gave his best effort every single game of the season and it was certainly noticeable. Starting in all 14 games, Egan made 167 saves this season.
The Panther’s will be graduating 3 outstanding seniors from the lacrosse team this season. Andrew Quesnel, Eric Gilbert, and Nolan Fredericks. Midfielder Andrew Quesnel played in 60 career games amassing 62 goals and 32 assists for 98 points. Eric Gilbert played in 60 total games accumulating 14 goals and 20 assists for 34 career points. Nolan Fredericks played in 60 career games compiling 15 goals and 3 assists for 18 total points.
2003 should be a great year for the Panthers, bringing back a young team filled with 5 sophomores and 10 freshman. The sophomores include Ethan Orr, Tim McNamara, Eric Gobiel, Jake Frerk, and Sam Harding. The freshman include Bryan Green, Ryan Cook, Steve Skinner, Chris Tillley, Mike Ferrelli, Pat O’Malley, John Gallagher, Bill Cosentino, Matt McCormick, and Tim Cross. Sophomore Eric Gobiel talks about this season and next by stating, “This season we had our ups and downs and the ball didn’t always roll our way, but we had a lot of fun and became one as a team. We will continue to be a strong group together and hopefully next year it will show how much hard work we’ve been putting in all year round.”
