Gorham, Maine – The Plymouth State Panthers defeated Southern Maine 10-7 Wednesday, scoring three goals in three of four periods. The on field performance improves PSU’s record to 7-2 with a solid 3-1 conference record. With the loss, Southern Maine falls to 5-8, dropping to 1-3 within the Little East Conference.
Plymouth Started the day strong when Shawn McEvoy (Spring, Texas) took an unassisted goal to the helm, with a little less than a minute into the quarter. Senior Ty Long (Dover, NH) had two solid points shortly after when he dished an assist to Junior Zach Frank (Wakefield, Ma) and then hit the back of the net of his own to make the score 3-0. Junior Jesse Kutz (Hopkinton, Ma) started the day in net and made three saves in the first quarter to keep the score at zero for Southern Maine.
Shawn McEvoy scored the first goal of the period with only four minutes remaining on the clock, thanks to an assist from Zach Frank. In less than thirty seconds Southern Maine started scoring when Kyle Baker found the net. Southern Maine’s Shawn White took an unassisted goal of his own, making the score to 4-2.
Goals were cut at three a piece in the third, after Ty Long scored another unassisted goal. Southern Maine responded with three goals in a row throughout a two minute span. With 5:25 on the clock, and the game tied at 5, Junior Chris Annunciata (Waltham, Ma) scored his first goal of the day from a Zach Frank assist. His second goal of the day came unassisted and put the Panthers up 7-5 going into the 4th.
Southern Maine’s Kyle Baker scored one of his four goals early in the fourth quarter, with the score now being 7-6. Soon after, Zach Frank put the Panthers up by two going unassisted to the net. Kyle Baker proved that Southern Maine would not give up and scored again with 4:34 on the clock making the score 8-7.
With conference royalty on the line, the catalyst of the offense took over. Number 23, Zach Frank silenced the crowd with another unassisted goal, to once again cushion the Panthers lead by two. Junior Brett Miller (Windham, NH) scored unassisted with under two minutes to go, ending the score 10-7 in favor of Plymouth.
The Three Goals and Two Assists by Zach Frank put his point total to a team leading 41 points (13 Goals, 28 Assists). Next leading scorer is Junior Brett Miller, and with his goal on the night he improved his point total to 26 (16 Goals, 10 Assists). PSU’s Leading goal scorer Chris Annunciata also improved his total after cashing in two goals. He now has 18 on the season.
Plymouth travels to Western Connecticut State University (8-5, 2-2) Saturday for an afternoon game LEC matchup, starting at one o’clock pm. Southern Maine also plays a tough conference match Saturday against Eastern Connecticut State (5-7, 3-1).
