
The Plymouth State community was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Jessica Hamlyn, 22, a fifth-year senior. According to the all-student e-mail that was sent out from the office of the Dean of Undergraduate Students, Hamlyn was killed early Sunday morning in an automobile accident on Rt. 28 in Barnstable, MA.
According to www3.whdh.com, the Jeep Grand Cherokee went off the road and down a 20-foot embankment before landing on its roof and catching on fire. The Jeep belonged to Hamlyn, and it is believed that Hamlyn and another young woman who has not yet been identified were the two that died in the crash.
President Steen expressed her deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Hamlyn, saying in an e-mail to the campus, “There is nothing harder for a parent than to lose a child, for a friend or relative than to lose someone dear, or for a campus than to lose a student.”
President Steen’s e-mail also said that anyone who wishes to send sympathy cards to Hamlyn’s parents, Russell and Pam, can forward them to Vice President Hage and he will get them to the family.
Hamlyn was an elementary education student at Plymouth State and was getting ready to student teach second grade, according to the Office of Teacher Certification. Professors in the education department will miss Hamlyn dearly, and ____________
According to an article that appeared on March 6 in the Cape Cod Times, Hamlyn was remembered by family and friends as having a, “Devilish laugh and a sense of style.” She was an avid snowboarder who lived life with no regrets. “Her happy-go-lucky energy was infectious,” said her older brother, Russell, in the article.
That same article in the Cape Cod Times said that services are tentatively planned for Saturday, March 10 at Doane, Beal & Ames Funeral Home on Route 134 in South Dennis from 1-3 P.M. Campus Ministry and Vice President Hage are also planning for a memorial service on campus. As of press time, no further details about the memorial service were available.
