Attention first-years!

Plymouth State students are all aware that they are required by the University to remain on campus if space is available unless requests are placed with the office of Residential Life located in Holmes House. This policy has been in effect for the past ten years. For the past four years, there have been more students requesting on campus housing than is available. Director of Housing and Dining, Frank Cocchiarella, said, “For years, the board of trustees for the University System of New Hampshire as well as the Plymouth State University cabinet have had a goal to house more students on campus and to increase the percentage of younger students living on campus.”

With Langdon Woods in its first year of operation, Plymouth State is well on its way to meeting the needs of those students who desire on campus housing. Mary Lyon Hall will be re-opening in the Fall of 2007, offering even more rooms for student tenancy. Regarding the requirements for on campus housing Cocchiarella said, “This should not be a surprise for students as this was stated in the admission packages sent to this year’s first year admitted students before they paid their admissions fees last spring.”

Students must meet the proper criteria to be automatically released from the on-campus housing requirement. The requirements for automatic housing release are:

20 or older by September 1, 2007

Completed 30 or more credits by the end of this Winterim

Currently living off-campus

Please note that all the information regarding the housing requirements is stated in the room draw information that has been handed out to all students.

With regards to how students are affected academically by campus housing, Cocchiarella says, “Studies show [that] students who live on campus do well.” Students should consult the Residential Life website at plymouth.edu/reslife to acquire further information.
