The Plymouth State University Cheerleading team took home second place at the 2007 Ltd Open College National Championships in Myrtle Beach South Carolina over the Universities spring break on March 17th.
The tournament included Medium-Collegiate All-Girls teams for the right to be called the national champion, and boasted a strong showing of over 300 teams for both the college and the high school competition that was holding their tournament at the same time in the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.
“Our girls were amazing, ” remarked seventh year head coach Carrie Kiley in a PSU follow up press release. “The crowd loved them.”
Central Connecticut State ended up with this year’s top honor in the tourney as they placed first followed by PSU. The other colleges and universities that attended were: Tennessee Tech, Cape Fear, Newbury College, James Madison University, Iowa Central Community College, and Christopher Newport University.
The teams were judged on a variety of team skills including: stunts, jumps, tumbling and voice projection, also they received points based on their crowd appeal.
Coach Kiley was thrilled at the performance by her team in the competition remarking on how happy she was for her girls to do so well on such a large stage. “This was a huge tournament,” said Kiley in a March 19th PSU press release. “It was a big cheerleading fest, and we are thrilled to do so well.”
The team is enjoying their first season as a varsity program and has been turning in sterling performances at both the men’s and women’s basketball games as well as in their own competition. “I couldn’t be more proud of how they represented Plymouth State University,” said Kiley in the press release.
With their first year a success, the PSU cheerleaders will undoubtedly be looking to improve for their sophomore season as a varsity program.
