Lions, and tigers, and bears, oh my! While Plymouth State does not have to worry about the first two creatures, this year, bears on campus are becoming frequent.
In the past five months, two different bears were found either on campus or too close for comfort. During June orientation a bear was outside of the Residence Hall Langdon Woods in the nearby wood area. It is believed that the bears live there, but they usually stay hidden further in the woods.
Officer Jen Frank talked about how the bear at orientation was not at the actual residence hall but right in the surrounding woods. She first tried clapping to scare the bear away with little luck. It took driving the cruiser into the woods and flashing the lights and sirens at the bear to get it to move.
Recently, there was another bear sighting on campus, but this time it was much closer than most wanted. A baby bear cub was found wandering the student apartments. At one point the cub climbed a tree and sat high, as curious groups of students came and went.
Fish and Game was called but they said to let the bear be and if there was still a problem they would send someone in the morning.
