For the first time in ten years, Poets and Writers Club held an open mic night at Biederman’s Pub & Deli located on Main Street on Wed., Mar. 27th. The small restaurant was packed with a variety of people ordering subs and drinks while they waited for the show to start.
The first speaker was a senior English major at Plymouth State University. She read a poem that she wrote titled “Free Falling”. It was a good introduction to the night and set the mood in the room.
Every one of the speakers that stood up to present their work was confident and composed. Junior Megan O’Gara said, “I thought it was really encouraging to see all of the PSU students and local poets getting up and performing their writing in front of total strangers. It takes guts to do that and I have a lot of respect for them all.”
It was uplifting to see these individuals step up and share personal writing that holds a lot of meaning to them with a room full of people they have never met before. Freshman Amanda Gagne said, “I really like hearing the poetry in the voice of the writer. It makes it feel deeper and more meaningful.” Each speaker brought a different type of emotion to the room and intrigued the audience. Junior Shannon McKane said, “It was interesting to see all of the different poets present themselves and their work in front of a crowded Biedermans.”
Overall, the event was a hit, and everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves. So if live performance is something you’re interested in, keep your eyes and ear open for the next open mic night. Even if it’s not normally your thing, switch the old routine up a bit; it can’t hurt to try something different for a change.
