Sports Spotlight: Peter Cofran

While attending a game at Plymouth State, consider all those people in the press box, or those working at the concession stand. What about those who are working the scoreboard? Who makes all that possible? Peter Cofran does.

As the Facilities/Events Coordinator at Plymouth State University, he makes all of that happen and much more. With the help of the athletic administration and student workers, Cofran oversees the scoreboard operations, ball chasers, concession stands and ticket takers.

Among other responsibilities, Cofran makes sure that students and fans are respecting the Division III Fan Sportsmanship Program, which includes cheering for one’s team and not against the visitors, not getting personal with players, coaches and officials and no profanity, vulgarity or racist or sexist comments.

Cofran grew up in Suncook, N.H. and attended Pembroke Academy. At Pembroke, he played shortstop and left field for the baseball team and played soccer. After graduating, he attended Plymouth State College, where he was the men’s basketball manager for four years.

He worked as the WPCR General Manager for two years and served as the Student Body President for one year. Before taking his current position, Cofran was the Equipment Manager and worked at Residential Life for five years. He was also the Assistant Director of Athletics.

He coached at Plymouth Regional High School, coaching the softball team for 25 years and the girls’ basketball team for 12 years.

Cofran works with the Athletic and Health & Human Performance (HHP) Departments to work with schedules for both departments. He sees that both schedules for athletics and HHP classes flow smoothly. For example, if the jogging team needs to use the soccer field while at the same time there is a soccer game, Cofran makes sure that no conflicts arise.

“In many ways, this is a community service,” said Cofran. “When a student asks a question, we send them in the right direction they need.”

Next time you attend a game or sporting event at Plymouth State, think of that popcorn or that scoreboard telling the score of the game, and thank Peter Cofran.
