PLYMOUTH – The Plymouth State women’s lacrosse team steamrolled the Western Connecticut State University Colonials 20-7 this past Saturday in a Little East Conference (LEC) game at Arold Field.
The Panthers showcased a dominating effort on offense while also showing a tough, gritty defense that was too much for the Colonials to handle.
The first half started off with a bang as the Panthers scored three goals in the first minute. The first half was highlighted by seniors Annie Pinault and Liz Boddy, who both scored three goals apiece. Plymouth’s defense also paved the way, as Western Connecticut only moved the ball to the Plymouth side of the field twice in the whole period. By intermission, the Panthers had a very healthy lead at 13-2.
In the second half, the Colonials put together a valiant effort, but they were still overtaken by Plymouth’s skill. Western Connecticut was able to score four goals and display better teamwork, but the Panthers matched that and then some, adding on to their lead by scoring seven more goals. They were led in the half by sophomore Cassidy Barry, who scored two goals. One was assisted by Pinault and the other assisted by senior Meg Cupoli.
Pinault and Boddy led the way statistically, each scoring four goals along with two assists. Barry followed with three goals. Senior captain Amanda Spadafora and senior Kelsey McDonald had two goals each. First-year Rhiannon Groff, sophomore Ellen Parent, first-years Selina Mazzola, Taylor Cambal and senior Meg Cupoli had a goal apiece. Cupoli also added two assists. Barry and Spadafora had one assist apiece. Western Connecticut was lead by Taylor Moore, who scored three goals.
The win gives the Panthers a record of 9-4 overall with a 4-1 record in the LEC, with a five-game winning streak. The Colonials drop to a record of 1-12 with a 0-5 conference mark. Plymouth will next be pitted against the Bears of Bridgewater State in their final game of the season, and only second home game on Saturday at Arold Field at 1:00 P.M.
