The Ace of Clubs

Swing dancing is an oldie, but still a goodie. In the interest of beginning an official swing dancing club, there will be a preliminary informational meeting on Tuesday, October 4, at 7 p.m. in the HUB’s Fireplace Lounge. Started by Alaina Ward and Sho Chang, the club is open to all members of the student body and community. The club will meet every Tuesday at 7 p.m. kicking off with a four-week beginner’s class that will restart every month. If enough people attend, there will also be an intermediate class started. After the class, there will be a dance and practice session at the first floor lounge of the Mandarin Taste Restaurant, located on 51 Main St. in downtown Plymouth. Hopefully, with enough active members and funding, the club will be able to take a monthly trip down to Boston’s Swing City where hundreds of people gather to dance every week.Swing dancing has its roots in African dancing, yet is described as an American dance. It reached its height in popularity in the 1930’s at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, New York. After losing some popularity, it came alive again in the late 1990’s, and is still going strong. Currently, most major cities in the United States and across the world have a swing dancing community. So now, here is the chance for Plymouth to have one if its own! Attend the informational meeting on Tuesday, or contact Alaina Ward at alaina1075@hotmail.com to find out more about learning to swing-diggity-dance. Be there, or be square!
