Jurassic 5…a Pleasant Surprise?

Many students could be heard disappointed throughout the campus when Jurassic 5 was announced as this years Spring Fling headliner. Students had anticipated a band that was more well-known or main stream. Rumors swirled about having a band like The Killers, Jason Mraz or even System of a Down. When Jurassic 5 was announced, some students may have felt a little let down. Every year rumors run through campus about what the possible headliners could be. The recent bands include Blessed Union of Souls, Guster, and most recently Black Eyed Peas. Many students were anticipating a band as well known as the Black Eyed Peas again this year. However, Jurassic 5 did not disappoint despite what many students may have expected. Lindsey Wilkins is a Plymouth State Junior who was originally skeptical of the choice for Spring Fling. “I didn’t know any of their music so I wasn’t really happy about it. I was hoping we would have a band everyone knew and could sing along to,” said Wilkins. However, she enjoyed the concert and had good things to say about Jurassic 5 “It was really fun. They were really good performers. But it still wasn’t as good as I was hoping because no one knew the songs to sing along.” Irene Vassilou was also not excited about the headliners. When she first heard the announcement she said, “I wasn’t too thrilled honestly. It wasn’t anybody really popular like last year.” Irene also wasn’t sure what kind of music Jurassic 5 played. “I didn’t know if they were a punk rock band or rap.” Irene thinks that a lot of the disappointment is because of the buzz from Black Eyed Peas last year. However, Irene was also pleasantly surprised. “The concert was really good I was really surprised.” Marc Rolleri is a Plymouth State Junior. He was not happy with the concert. Of Plymouth’s decision on Jurassic 5 Marc says, “I thought it was a little pathetic. I think it could have been a much more popular band.” Not only was it a let down because of last years concert but Marc had other reasons for expecting more, “I think with the amount of money that our class made we could have gotten someone better.” Marc was also not impressed with the concert in general “I recognized one or two of the songs. They worked the crowd and stuff like that, but it wasn’t very good. I think we could have gotten someone way better, like Brandi,” says Rolleri. Jonathan Scott is a sophomore, who had high expectations before the concert. Jon had never heard their music before. After they were announced as the Spring Fling band, Jon looked for music from Jurassic 5. “I had heard of them but I had never heard their music,” he states. After hearing a little bit of their music Jon says: “I was actually pretty excited to hear them.” When the concert came on Saturday, Jon was not disappointed. “I heard them in concert and I was actually really stoked about them.” For the most part, Plymouth State was happy with the performance Saturday Night. All in all, Plymouth branched out this year and took a risk that paid off.
