To The Editor:
Two weeks ago, I wrote a letter to the editor complimenting two positive decisions that affected two different universities across the country. Today I am writing to compliment two students here at Plymouth State who have allowed themselves to have less personal glory in order to allow their respective organizations to flourish.
The first student is Monica Gemmiti, a sophomore at PSU. She is the current president of ALSO, a position she has held all year. When I asked her about next year’s plans in regards to ALSO, she told me that she was going for vice president. Surprised, I questioned her as to the logic in her decision, since she had seemed to enjoy her position. Her answer was even more surprising-she thought that her replacement would do a better job.
The other person who has recently impressed me was Adam Russell, the president of the PSU Gaming Club. The organization has an election on May 3rd, and it seemed as if he and another member of the club were going to go head-to-head for a potentially divisive presidential run for next year. When I spoke to Adam tonight, however, he told me that due to the lack of people willing to be Gaming Club Secretary he was going to step down and let the other candidate take the position. I was very impressed with this, since Adam takes his responsibilities very seriously. (Though I wonder…can you really be serious as the president of the Gaming Club?)
I am impressed with the maturity these people have shown in making these decisions. I was forced, due to personal reasons, to drop out of the Student Body President race this year, and therefore I can empathize with how difficult this decision must have been. I compliment them again on their willingness to sacrifice for the greater good, and hope that other students, faculty, staff, and administration at PSU would follow their lead.
Sincerely,
Dustin Siggins
