On Friday, April 13, the Parking Committee made several recommendations to help improve recurring parking issues on our campus.
They requested that the parking permits for the fall of 2007 and spring of 2008 school year do not increase in price. The committee also voiced its support toward filling the position of a night enforcement official to keep overnight parkers without permits.
On the topic of fees around campus, the parking committee made a recommendation that fines for minimal violations be raised $5, and that the fines for Lot Maintenance violations be increased to $50.
“The goal of lot maintenance fines is not to punish the student of Plymouth State, but to help them help us,”said Dan Fornash, head of the Student Senate Parking Committee. “It is to get students to move their cars, because when they do not move their cars during maintenance, those lots are not capable of being fully cleared of snow and ice. This could lead to potential harm and injuries to the students.”
The parking committee also recommended that core violations no longer be in effect, but rather be treated as an emergency lane violation. This recommendation came into effect based off of Infrastructure Phase 2, the replacement of fiber-optic and electrical cables and steam pipes from Center Lodge, down the pedestrian walkway between Hyde Hall and Smith and into parts of High Street.
These recommendations were made Friday, but will not be finalized until President Steen decides whether these recommendations are going to be implemented.
In May, the committee will begin will begin looking at the over all parking structure, such as faculty/staff parking and its costs, first year student parking and its costs, and the over all continued look at university parking.
