Press Release-Plymouth A master tenor saxophonist, multi-reedsman, composer, and jazz educator, Salim Washington is one of the fastest rising stars on the New York Jazz scene today. On Tuesday, November 1, Washington will give a solo performance in the Karl Drerup Art Gallery. A native of Detroit, Salim Washington moved east to Boston to attend Harvard University, and decided to remain in Boston for years, becoming a musical constant in the city’s predominantly African-American area of Roxbury. Washington’s instrumental music has spiritual style filled with the influences of John Coltrane, George Adams, and Pharoah Sanders. His first album in 1997 emphasized his potential as a renowned artist when his band, Roxbury Blues Aesthetic, recorded Love in Exile for Accurate. In addition to his own group, Salim plays regularly with a number of ensembles including the Donald Smith Quintet, Antonio Dangerfield’s Ensemble Uniqua, Frank Lacy’s Vibe Tribe, and the Frank Lacy Octet, James Jabbo Ware’s Me, We, and Them Orchestra, the Brooklyn Repertory Ensemble, Ahmed Abdullah’s Diaspora, and the Carl Grubbs group. He has traveled extensively, playing music festivals throughout the US and Canada, Latin America, and Europe.
