I figured I would take a break from the harsh words and paparazzi photography and educate the men this week. After some thought, it occurred to me: how can I criticize those who have not been taught?
Men seem to have problems knowing what a good outfit is and what is bad. It’s not 100 percent their faults. We as society do tend to offer advice and focus on the female population. However, men are in need of fashion love and hate too. Contrary to what others believe, men are very self-conscious of what their fashion says about them. Stores like Abercrombie & Fitch, Gap and American Eagle seem to make it slightly easier for the X chromosomed individuals on campus to dress appropriately. Though, it seems that guys still seem to fall off track. Once they get their goodie bags home and are left to their own accord in the early a.m. They lose all that they learned and saw while shopping in the store.
My first bit of advice is when looking at your closet with a blank stare: DON’T STRESS IT! It’s not that bad. Look in your closet, what is cool? What is not? Well, if it does not fit you, it is not cool. When dressing its been said time and time again in many magazines and in prior articles that you, as the male, should wear clothing that fits your body. Men tend to slip into the baggier clothing claiming “it’s more comfortable.” Somehow, when I see a guy walking with their pants around the bottom half of their butt, walking as if they went to the bathroom in their pants, constantly having to adjust, I can not even imagine to any extend that this is “… more comfortable.”
Trevor Chandler, 20, a political science major here at Plymouth State University said that he looks to see what he has already worn that week and tries not to repeat that fashion choice when he thinks about what to wear in the morning.
Folks will debate over and over how often you can wear a pair of jeans before washing them. Some say once, but most agree if you can smell the jeans, they need to be washed. If you don’t wear underwear, you should wash them after one wear. If you spill something on them, wash them. Other than that wear them two to four times. T-shirts are not the same. Stock up because, t-shirts should be washed after .5 – 1 wear. What this means is that changing your shirt mid-day is something that is recommended if you sweat or get something on your shirt. One would hope that this common knowledge.
It is okay to ask others about your outfit selection. The concern you show over your clothing selection in no way makes you a weaker male. those who are sexually secure with themselves understand that it is okay to care about their personal hygiene and appearance, for all you others, so drop the tude and relax. Caring about your overall appearance is actually an appealing quality to both sexes. Keep that in mind.
All in all, guys, open your eyes as well as your minds, pay attention and begin to care; your appearance is the first impression before you open your mouth. Many people will judge based on your appearance and well, can you fault them? If you don’t appear to care about yourself, then why should they care about what you have to say? This is not to say that you need to dress like a rock star or shop name brands, just a neat and tidy appearance is all that is required.
