Get the green ball rolling

I’m sure you’ve have heard all the hubbub about going green and how important it is to do your part. But today there are a few different things you can do to join this effort: ways that are unordinary and interesting too.

How about those movies that you own which are great but you personally are never planning on watching again? Instead of letting them collect dust on the back of your shelves, how about swapping them out for something different? I’m talking about SwapTree.com. Swaptree is a website which provides the opportunity for you to do exactly what is in the website title: swap. You can swap movies, music, books or video games. All you do is choose the ones you wish to get rid of, and search for something you would like to have. Is there a movie that you have been dying to see? I know personally this site excited me because I always tend to tune into a movie at least an hour into it. Yesterday I caught the last 25 minutes of Clueless before class. I thought, “Wow, this movie is great, I really want to see it!” From there I added the title to my swap list and when somebody has it and, is also looking for a movie in my collection then we swap!

The system is automated so that a computer does all the matching up. Once it finds a match, both parties are notified and then you simply print off a label, mail out your selection, and wait for your new item to be mailed to you. SwapTree is great because you can swap what you no longer wish to keep around and request something that you want. It only makes sense, considering that the old CDs or DVDs which you never use are just gathering dust! Instead you could swap them out and make another persons day. Swaptree is just one exciting, new way to be eco-friendly. Another growing green trend circles around bill paying. Citizens Bank offers an incentive which really gets the going-green ball rolling. For every bill paid online, or every debit transaction done at a retail store, Citizens Bank credits you 10 cents and up to $120 each year. It might not seem like a whole lot, but it certainly adds up. Considering that many other banks do not offer this function, it definitely is something to check out. A definition of going-green found at google.com is defined as “a phrase referring to individual action that a person can consciously take to curb harmful effects on the environment through consumer habits, behavior, and lifestyle.” These two methods mentioned do just that. They are means of putting a little bit of a halt on the consumer behaviors which have gone wild in recent years. Old books and movies… where could these possibly end up? All the paper that is used in sending out payments in the mail contributes to the amount of waste in such places as dumpsters and landfills. Why not take advantage of these great ways to improve our environment? Think outside the box and partake in a non-traditional means to going green!
