PLYMOUTH – On Saturday, April 9, the Plymouth State University baseball team played the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs in a Little East Conference doubleheader at Panther Park. PSU checked into the game at 4-10 on the season and 0-3 in LEC play, while UMD entered at 5-10 on the season, and 0-2 in LEC play. In the first game of the twinbill, UMass Dartmouth scored three runs in the first inning and added four more runs in the second inning before eventually taking a 14-6 victory. The Panthers collected ten hits on the game, including two hits a piece from junior C.J. Rousseau, sophomore Trevor Hall, sophomore Steve Campo, and freshman John Pogorzelski. The Corsairs had large contributions from seniors Jim Peters and Rich Whitney. Peters performed well with a four hit game, with two doubles, and two driven in. Whitney had four hits as well, including a homer and four RBI’s. Starting pitcher for the Corsairs, Lee Marques (junior), was credited with the victory, and worked six innings while allowing three runs with just one earned. In the second game of the doubleheader, the Panthers were first to be put on the board in the home half of the first inning as junior Scott Begalle drove in a run on a base hit. The Panthers followed in second inning by scoring four more runs to take a comfortable 5-0 lead. Two runs came from a Derek Guimond (senior) double, while Trevor Hall and senior Matt Gabellieri chipped in with RBI singles. Gabellieri finished the game with three hits. The PSU lead soon diminished as the Corsairs scored three runs in the following inning, then three more in the fourth to take the lead. UMD added one more run in the fifth, and finally three more in the eighth to tack onto the lead, and claim the 10-6 victory. The two losses dropped Plymouth to 4-12 on the season, and 0-5 in LEC play, while UMD improved to 7-10 overall, and 2-2 in LEC play. The Panther’s next home game will be on Saturday, April 23 at 12p.m. It will be played as a double header against the University of Massachusetts Boston.
