Where is Greg Maxwell?

MAMMOTH LAKES, CA -Last year you may have seen Greg Maxwell in one of your classes. However, it’s more likely that you saw him at one of the local ski areas, since that’s where he spent the majority of his time. This year Greg’s dropped out of school and left his job at Hong Kong Garden to become a professional snowboarder.Maxwell, at age 20 now calls Mammoth Lakes, CA his home. There he has his own house and snowboards professionally for Atomic Snowboards, who describe Maxwell as “Greg kills it on rails, parks, and pipes. Keep your eye on this kid, he rips.” He also rides for Hoven Eyewear, meanwhile keeping sponsorship support from New Hampshire Old School, one of the local shops here in NH. He left Plymouth after spending only a year here, but when asked what he missed about the school he quickly replied “Everything!” He did make it back here this year to ride at his home mountains of Loon and Waterville and said “I was impressed. I thought they both had really great park setups this year.” However, his new favorite place is Sonora Pass, CA, a backcountry spot that Maxwell describes as “The sickest place I’ve seen so far.”Since becoming a professional snowboarder Maxwell has been featured in several magazines including Snowboarder, Eastern Edge, Platinum Magazine, and Transworld Snowboarding. He’s also recently been filming for his first film. He’ll be appearing in “Shredequite”, the new film from Alterna Action Sports. Maxwell’s also been busy competing all over the country. This year he’s been in several competitions. He won the Platinum Snowboarding Rail Jam in Atlantic City, NJ at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort. Maxwell more recently competed in the U.S. Open in the slopestyle event, where riders are judged on their skills in the entire terrain park all at once. He made it to the semi-finals and placed 28th overall out of over 150 competitors.Maxwell says “Snowboarding’s probably the most fun activity out there. What it means to me is if I can stay healthy, than I can keep doing it and not worry about other stuff because snowboarding will stay the main thing in my life.”Maxwell started snowboarding eight years ago, learning at Waterville Valley and Gunstock. When he’s not snowboarding you can usually find him skateboarding or playing the drums. For his future, Maxwell wants to continue living in California and keep his house at Mammoth Lakes in his name. He plans on continuing to film and keep making movies while staying competitive and not forgetting to have fun. As far as future plans for school go Maxwell says “I’ll go back to school when I’m done being a pro snowboarder and I’ll finish it as quickly as possible so I can just continue to have fun.”
