Chargers shock Panthers in home opener 65-56

The Colby Sawyer Chargers lit up the scoreboard with 65 points en route to handing the PSU women’s basketball team their first loss of the season in their home opener Tues., Dec. 2 at Foley Gymnasium.

The Chargers broke the 26-26 halftime tie and picked up the pace, but PSU would not go down without a fight. In the end, PSU could not get enough momentum going to spark a comeback, “They were a good team, tough team. But we came out and played a little scared and our inexperience showed but that’s not who we are,” said Coach Lavigne, “There were some controversial officiating calls towards the end of the game and on a few times proved to be momentum killers. We just couldn’t get any momentum going, and every time we did get something going it would get taken away by a foul, or a steal,” Coach Lavigne added.

Leading the offensive effort for PSU was sophomore Amanda Kania, who netted 19 points and brought her season total to 62 points. The game was also Kania’s second double-double on the season. Also chipping in was junior Laura Kent with 9 points, raising her season total to 66 points. “Amanda Kania had a good game. She took smart shots and had some big steals for us,” said Coach Lavigne, “Katie Sunderland had a good game too; she does all the little things right like steals and tying up the ball.”

Alicia Doucet added 12 points of her own on the night. Kania would prove she could play both sides of the ball as she recorded 3 steals and 2 blocks. Kalie Judd would add 3 steals of her own along with her 9 points. Rounding out the defense with 2 blocks was Alicia Doucet.

Terri Duffy would pace the Chargers with an impressive 29 points with six other players contributing points to the offensive effort of Colby Sawyer. The Chargers played a fast and physical game and gave PSU some trouble working their game plan, “We want to work inside out and we couldn’t get our inside game going which didn’t help us establish a game on the perimeter.” said Coach Lavigne.

With this game in the books, PSU is looking ahead to their next game against a very tough East Conn. team this Sat., Dec. 8 at East Conn. “We open our Little East play next against Eastern Connecticut, who is very tough,” said Coach Lavigne. When asked about what they need to work on, Coach Lavigne was very team focused, ” We need to improve our team defense and our rebound game. We always practice doing the little things right, and doing the little things right help the big things.”
