Plymouth State Wrestling Anticipates to Have Strong Season Under New Coach

Matt Eldredge is the new head coach for Plymouth State’s wrestling team. Eldredge takes over for Tommy Prairie, who left to go to Washington and Jefferson (PA). Eldredge was a four-year wrestler (at 197 pounds) and heavyweight for the nationally ranked SUNY Cortland program, where his 24 pins rank ninth in the program’s history.  He was a member of the Panther’s staff last season, when the Panther’s placed second at the New England Dual Meet Championships, their highest finish ever. Last weekend, they faced top competition against SUNY Cortland State, King’s (PA), SUNY Oneonta State and Wilkes (PA).  Although the team went 1-3, they got very strong individual efforts from junior Jake Gagnon who went 3-0 individually in the heavyweight division, and senior Rob Phillips who went 3-1 at the 184 lbs. division.  The captains for the Panthers are Josh Huber, Rob Phillips and Mike Willey. They have a home meet against Norwich (11/16) and then the Doug Parker Invitational at Springfield College ( 11/19). The squad had a very impressive 8-6 record last year and look to leave right where they left off.
