Get up, get out and get some! A column for improving your sex life

Get it up, put it in and finish. That’s how they say it’s supposed to be. When it doesn’t work like that anymore, turn to drugs! Viagra will fix your problems. But it is important for both men and women to know how to keep Smiling Bob smiling, without any drugs.

Ladies first. It’s hard to make it to the gym. Sometimes sleeping in is so much better, but did you know that those trips could improve your sex life? There are even some important exercises to know that focus on the lady parts. Cosmopolitan.co.uk illustrates some important positions to know while working out.

“Sexy scissors” is accomplished while lying down, touching the knee to the alternate elbow and repeating until satisfied. “This maneuver tightens your tummy and legs, and it can speed up your turn-on time,” said Molly Triffin of Cosmopolitan. While still laid out with bent knees, “The Lusty Lift” helps a woman concentrate on breathing and strengthens her pelvis. With hands lying flat above the head, the pelvis is lifted one inch off of the ground, breathing in on the way up and exhaling on the way down. As Triffin reported in her interview with gynecologist Dr. Hilda Hutcherson, “Practicing rhythmic breathing will help you breathe in tandem with your partner during sex so that your bodies are in tune. Deep breathing during intercourse also intensifies orgasm by boosting your blood flow.”

For men, herbs are the way to go. Chris Kilham, a journalist from Discovery.com, researched herbs found in the Amazon that are said to increase sex drive and act as an aphrodisiac. “Catuaba and muirapuama, two common trees growing widely across the Amazon River basin, enjoy centuries of safe, effective use as bona fide aphrodisiacs,” Kilham assures. Although these herbs are popular throughout Brazil and most of South America, they are only beginning to become an American commodity.

Until catuaba and muirapuama are more locally produced, there are still safe and effective alternatives to Viagra. Dr. Linda of HealthyHealing.com swears by the powers of ginseng. It increases blood flow and helps prolong an erection. She wrote, “It helps regulate the functions of the organs and glands, strengthens the immune and nervous systems, and normalizes blood sugar.” It might as well be a cup of coffee in the morning!

Herbs are also beneficial when shared between partners. Sam Baker, an editor of cosmopolitan.co.uk interviewed sex and relationships author Rallie McAllister. She emphasized the prospect of a tea ceremony, or something similar but possibly a little less formal, before sexual intercourse. She says, “The warm liquid relaxes you; the caffeine energizes you. And there are mysterious metabolic benefits that actually make you burn more calories.” Ah, tea, not just a snooty dessert drink for the British any more.

Exercise, herbs and creating a connection are the three best ways to enhance sex without turning to drugs. Until next time, keep it kinky, but keep it safe.
