America passed another milestone on Tuesday. After 230- year s, America’s population officially surpassed 300 million. The 300 millionth citizen was born at approximately 7:46 a.m.
The Census Bureau cannot be completely certain that the lucky baby was actually born on Tuesday because of immigration, but this hasn’t stopped several hospitals – and parents – from taking credit for the birth.
According to The New York Times at nytimes.com, Emanuel Plata (weighing in at 6 pounds and 15 ounces), was born at Elmhurst Hospital Center in Queens, N.Y., was one of the several babies that could possibly be the “baby of the year.” Hospital officials proudly provided the infant with a knit cap that displayed the message, “America’s 300 millionth baby.”
Proud parents Gricelda Plada, 22, and Armanda Jimenez, 25, are both grateful that their son was healthy. Jimenez stated, “My baby is healthy. My wife is fine. What more luck do I want?”
The United States currently ranks as the country with the third highest population in the world, following only China and India. The last milestone of 200,000,000 was passed on November 20, 1967 when Robert Ken Woo Jr. was born in Atlanta. It will be a few years before America hits 400 million – the Census Bureau estimates sometime around 2043.
